BPO night shift: Girls get call
NEW DELHI: Stung by reports of two call centres being denied permission to employ women in night shifts, the Haryana government has sprung into action and hurriedly granted exemption to Convergys.
The other affected call centre Saffron Global has also been advised to obtain necessary exemption under Section 30 of the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act 1958.

This will enable these two call centres to permit women employees to work in the night shifts.
Meanwhile, IT-enabled services industry has welcomed the reported move by Haryana government to consider changing and modifying any laws which were coming into their way. A Saffron spokesperson said: "This is a good gesture by the government and will go a long way in ensuring vibrant industrial culture in Gurgaon."
In light of the reported misuse of an old law, the Haryana government, it seems, has now realised the growing irrelevance of many laws and rules which were framed at a time when something like outsourcing was surely not in sight. On Tuesday, Promilla Issar, principal secretary, labour, government of Haryana had told TOI:
"We can consider amending rules which are affecting call centres. We are absolutely open about it." Meanwhile allaying fears of the industry, Issar on Friday sent a note clarifying that:
"At present, at least 17 call centres have been given such exemption by the Haryana government and these have not indicated any legal difficulty in employing women for night duty.
Only a few call centres where the managements were either not giving the required information or were not complying with the prescribed conditions, have been denied this exemption."
One of the affected call centres however said: "The document declaring that we have adequate facilities for security of women employees required for the said exemption had already been submitted by us."
